Working with sizes

Pixels

Pixels (picture elements) are the light dots that make up the image on your screen. The number of pixels fitting in your screen, in width and height respectively, is called screen resolution.

Pixels are used in QwikZite as the unity for defining width and height of the different parts of the webpage and the size of images.
When defining sizes in your website, you have to take in account that there is quite a variability in the screen resolution of visitors.

Common sizes for webdesign

Over the years, computer screens are getting more advanced. The annual world-wide research of applied screen resolutions by OneStat.com (April 2007) concluded the following percentages internet users:

800x600 (8,18%)
1024x768 (55,34%)
1152x864 (3,67%)
1280x800 (8,23%)
1280x1024 (17,23%)

In total 90% of the users are presently visiting the web with a 1024x768 or higher resolution.

It is annoying, if not unfeasible, to read pages of which the lines run out of the screen. Visitors would have to scroll horizontally for every line.
As common standard for webdesign it is advised to suit your site for a width of 800 pixels at least (actually a little less because the vertical scroll bar takes up some of the screen space). In this way, 99% of the internet users will be able to visit your site without any problem.

Automatic adjustments in QwikZite

In QwikZite you can define the absolute width of the outer parts of the webpage.
The width of the central parts, 'title area', 'top divider middle' and 'content area' is automatically adjusted to the screen resolution of the visitor. If, for instance, the width of button and news area is increased, the less space will be available for the page content.

If the central parts contain words and images exceeding the available space, QwikZite will not be able any longer to adjust the width automatically and the page will 'run off the screen'.

In illustration:

Screenshot of www.qwikzite.com in a resolution of 800x600 pixels (common minimum standard). The width of button and news area are the same, but in comparison with the previous screenshot the central part is smaller. All parts of the webpage are still readable, however.

Screenshot of www.qwikzite.com in a resolution of 640x480 pixels. The width of button and news area is still the same. The central part (hardly readable any longer) cannot be further narrowed because of the text input and image. The news can only be read by moving the horizontal scroll bar.
