Menu 'News'

In short

  • Functions

  • In the 'News' menu, news items or similar extra information can be added to the webpage.

    There is a wide range of options:

    You can make items to appear or disappear at the frontend at predefined dates.
    You can show items on all pages or link them up with specific pages.

    The so-called 'short text' is visible in the webpage concerned.
    But you can also add an extensive 'long text', which is displayed in a new screen, the 'news page'. The long text has a default option for adding an image.

  • Frontend

  • The short versions of news items are displayed in the NEWS AREA in the right part of the webpage (see upper screenshot).

    By clicking on the short text, the long version of the news item is opened in the CONTENT AREA of a new page, the extra news page that is linked up with the page concerned (see lower screenshot).
    The number of displayed full versions is adjustable. Beneath these full versions, the titles of the other items are displayed in a clickable list.
    The adjustable news page title is displayed in the TITLE AREA in top of the page.

    Points for attention

  • Settings of news column and news page

  • For the user's benefit, it is possible to define default settings for several news properties in the 'Defaults' menu. These settings will apply to the whole site. In any sitestyle and any page you can define deviating settings, overriding the default settings.

    The settings concerned:
    - maximum number of short versions in the news column;
    - the 'read more' text in the news column;
    - maximum number of long versions on the news page;
    - title of the news page.

    Explanatory notes to the input fields
    ID:The ID (identification number of the news item) is automatically generated.
    Working title:The working title is not visible at the frontend, but is a practical tool at the backend. At the backend the news items are listed in alphabetic order of working title.

    Tip:
    If you include the publishing date of the news item in the working title, the items will be listed in chronological order.
    Title of the news item:The title is displayed at the frontend at 2 places:
    • As title of the short version in the NEWS COLUMN.
      If a long version is available, the title of the short version will automatically become a hyperlink to that long version.
    • As title of the long version on the NEWS PAGE.
    Short text:This text will be the body text of the short version in the NEWS COLUMN.
    Long text:This text will be the body text of the long version on the NEWS PAGE.
    Image:This image is displayed at the frontend in the upper left corner of the long version on the NEWS PAGE, proportionally resized to a width of 200 pixels.
    Horizontal and vertical space between image and text is added automatically.

    It is advised not to enter an image with a width less than 200 pixels.

    For comprehensive information about images, see: Working with images.
    Always visible (overrides publishing dates):By activating this checkbox, the publishing dates beneath will be overrided and the item will always be visible at the frontend.

    (Note: 'always' is not the same as 'on all pages!)
    Publishing date
    (start):
    First day that the item will be visible at the frontend.

    On this day the news item will be activated automatically. It gives you the opportunity to add news items to the site weeks in advance.

    • If several news items have the same starting date, they will be displayed in alphabetic order of working title.

    • The fact whether a news item is always visible or not, has no influence on the order of display.
    Publishing date
    (end):
    Last day that the item will be visible at the frontend.
    Visible on website:By activating or inactivating this checkbox, you can make the news item visible or unvisible at the frontend.
