The first steps

Standard contents of QwikZite

When your QwikZite subscription starts, the QZAdmin programme is installed as online software package - under your own domain name - at one of the servers of your service provider.

The next tables already contain entries:

  • SITESTYLE
    A number of sitestyle examples (style ID=1 t/m 6).

  • PAGE
A provisional homepage (page ID=1) with a text "This website is under construction ...".
    An error page (page ID=2).

  • DEFAULTS
A set of default settings in which the first sitestyle example (style ID=1) is defined as default sitestyle and the provisional homepage (page ID=1) as start page.
The error page (page ID=2) is defined as default error page.

  • FOTO
A so-called favicon (foto ID=1). This image shall not be removed. You can replace it at a later stage with your own favicon. (Click here for further information.)

Viewing the standard contents

Browse to:
http://yoursite

In accordance with the default settings, the provisional homepage is displayed in the default sitestyle.

The URL appearing in the address bar of your browser is:
http://yoursite/index.php?page_id=1&style_id=

in which 'page_id=1' refers to the provisional homepage and 'style_id=' refers to the default sitestyle.

As sitestyle 1 is the default sitestyle, the URL:
http://yoursite/index.php?page_id=1&style_id=1

would give the same result.

Preview of standard contents in another sitestyle

To view the standard contents in a different style, you can define another sitestyle as default sitestyle in the 'defaults' table. However, this would imply an actual change of the website and visitors would notice this change too.

A practical feature, that will later be useful as well, is the possibility of taking a 'preview' of the other sitestyles. This is done by changing the URL in the address bar of the browser by hand, as following:
http://yoursite/index.php?page_id=1&style_id=2

http://yoursite/index.php?page_id=1&style_id=3

etc.

After this preview, you can select another style als default sitestyle as yet.

Obviously, the preview feature also allows you to test sitestyle adjustments and new sitestyles.

Note: The example sitestyles can also be viewed in 'full glory' (i.e. with functioning buttons, news items, etc.) on QwikZite.com.

Before you start ...
  • In principle nothing withholds you from starting right away with changing the provisional homepage into a real homepage, adding pages, etc.

As long as no links to your site are published on the web elsewhere, and as long as you haven't promoted your site, there is hardly any possibility that people will visit your site by chance.
In this stage you can play and experiment with your site to the top of your bent!

  • A rather different approach is building a complete site first, and making it accessible for visitors at the time it is finished by one push of a button.

You can do this by adding a new page, which shall be the future homepage, and linking it up with the other content.
While visitors still see the provisional homepage of the site (page ID=1) with the text "This website is under construction ...", you can preview the whole site at the URL:
    http://yoursite/index.php?page_id=3

If the site is finished, you can make it accessible for visitors by defining the new instead of the provisional homepage as start page, in the 'Defaults' menu.

Adding pages

In the QZAdmin, select the table 'Page' and click on the pictogram 'Add new entry'.
Follow the explanations in the screen and the additional explanatory notes under Menu Page of this manual.
After adding the content, press the button 'Submit changes'.

The page has now been added to the database of QwikZite. And in the upper field of the screen, the automatically generated ID number of the page is now shown.

For the moment the page is not accessible for visitors, as no button is referring to the page yet.

But you can already preview the page at the URL:
http://yoursite/index.php?page_id=X

in which X shall be replaced by the ID number of the page.

If necessary, you can now still make corrections in the page content before making the page accessible. (Obviously, also accessible pages can always be changed at a later stage.)

Making pages accessible by buttons

In the QZAdmin, select the table 'Button' and click on the pictogram 'Add new entry'.
Follow the explanations in the screen and the additional explanatory notes under Menu Button of this manual.
After adding the content, press the button 'Submit changes'.

The button is now visible at the frontend and from now on the page is accessible for visitors.

Adding news and links to a page

You can now add news items and links to the webpage, by following the explanation on the pages Menu News en Menu Link.

In both menus you can choose whether entries shall be visible on all pages or whether they shall be linked up with specific pages.

Adjusting the sitestyle

It is advised to add a couple of pages, buttons, news items and possible links to the site, befóre adjusting the look of your site in the 'Sitestyle' menu.

You can better see whether certain changes may conflict with other elements on the webpage and this may save you a lot of unnecessary work.

And, often forgotten: the sitestyle is only the packaging of the content, the content itself shall always be the first concern!

Use of other tables

When starting with QwikZite, the use of the tables 'Foto', 'File' and 'Topic' is not essential yet.

Support
